Beautiful painting reproduction on canvas with aged and cracked effect, as if this painting had been discovered looking in an old attic, a work of art hidden from sight and carefully preserved.

This painting depicts "Place St Mark, Venice" painted by Francesco Guardi (italian painter).
The original of this work was made in 1770.

First painter of figures, Francesco Guardi quickly turned to the urban landscape, an area in which he developed a singular pictorial language. If he draws inspiration from Canaletto's work, he moves away from it by a more free, vibrant, almost impressionist style before the hour. Her canvases are distinguished by the depth of their perspectives, the refined radiance of their palette, the light silverhe bathe the scenes, and the picturesque agitation of his miniature characters – the famous macchiette – sketched with vivacity and expressiveness.

A sensitive and talented columnist of Venetian life, Guardi excels in capturing the ceremonies, festivals and public events that rhythmize the Serenism. The painting presented here is part of a set of twelve works inspired by engravings from Canaletto's drawings, recounting the great moments of public life of Doge Alvise IV Mocenigo. Ten of these paintings are now preserved at the Louvre, while the twelfth belongs to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

This scene illustrates the election of the doge in 1763, a highly symbolic event. The new head of the Republic was brought to St Mark's Square on the basis of a man's back pozzetto (small wooden well ceremonial), and throwing to the crowd parts of gold and goldsilver hit her effigy. The gondoliers, armed with long sticks, open a passage through the dense crowd, creating a central dynamic that reinforces the rigour of the architectural perspective.

Despite the distant view and the vast expanse of the square, Guardi multiplied the details. The crowd simmers in a myriad of sketched figures with large coloured features, while the architecture of the basilica and arcades is rendered with extreme thoroughness, sometimes to the detail of the finest brush. The scene, bathed in light and movement, reveals a composition of great narrative vitality, a faithful and poetic reflection of the eighteenth century Venice.
