This painting represents a scene of historical type "The Consummation The Course of the Empire" painted by Thomas Cole (American painter).
The original of this painting was painted in 1836.
It is one of 5 paintings in a set that depicts the rise and fall of an imaginary city, located at the lower end of a river valley, near its meeting with a bay in the sea.
