First intended to mimic natural hair, the wig became a court-dictated fashion and an important status symbol in the 17th century.
This fashion, launched in France by Louis XIII, quickly spread to other European countries and lasted until the French Revolution.
At that time, anyone who wanted to pass for a gentleman had to include this accessory in his ceremonial dress.
The wigs were then extremely complicated, imposing and powdered to be white.
