Absolutely original and very beautiful decorative object here is a re-edition in polychrome carved wood of a small mask with the effigy of a lion, from the island of Sumatra (Indonesia).
Bataks live communally in the regions bordering the elusive Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world.
Also called “Toba people”, they are recognized in Indonesia for their qualities as musicians, their great oratorical skills, their architecture and their constant questioning of the Indonesian authorities.
Concerned about maintaining ties with their ancestors and protecting them, the Bataks attach great importance to funeral rituals, which take place in particular around their masks and sculptures in wood or stone, of which this lion mask is the worthy representative.
