These pendants called "Torfans" were essentially invested with a protective power.
The Gan people of Burkina Faso, often referred to as a "relic people", have a unique sculptural style loaded with rituals and symbolism.
Nevertheless, the artists paid particular attention to the expression of detail and the finesse of the lines.
The spirals are symbols of eternity and would be a sign of belonging to the royal family.

> Torfan-snakes: The representation of snakes is the central theme in the art of metalwork among the Gan. The Torfan can have up to ten heads symbolizing the extent of its power. They are protectors of the family and cultures

> Torfan-crocodiles: The most important pieces were reserved for kings, sometimes also adorned with the crocodile symbol of power, patience, but also holder of ancestral knowledge. The crocodile also protects the soul of the deceased

> Torfan-chameleon: The chameleon was used less in the sculpture of pendants because it represents knowledge and wisdom, and therefore reserved for the wise or the healer of the tribe.
